PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCEJan Mahaffey Overton is the founder of Janet M. Overton, P.C. The practice focuses primarily in family law, estate planning and administration, civil litigation, and real estate. In addition to the experience Jan has as a licensed attorney, Jan brings to her law firm something equally as valuable: practical experience gained over the last 20 years in paralegal and administrative capacities in large and small firms, and in both big and small cities. While in law school, Jan gained valuable courtroom experience working in the solicitor’s office, in criminal mock trial competition and by working as an associate at a civil law firm focusing in the areas of insurance, contract, transactional, and family law. Her practical experience base includes drafting of wills and estate administration documents; commercial and residential real estate contracts; complex commercial real estate transactions; civil litigation (personal injury, contract, and collections); franchise law; general corporate work; and mergers and acquisitions.

CIVIC ACTIVITIES
A native of Gwinnett County, Jan is actively involved in building the local community. Over the years, Jan has coordinated annual estate planning seminars for single mothers, and has volunteered time to assist victims of domestic violence in obtaining protective orders, divorces and child support enforcement and modification. While in law school, Ms. Overton coordinated on-site training for volunteer legal assistance at a domestic violence shelter. Janet M. Overton, P.C. is devoted to continuing to promote the same values, and since its beginning has adopted a policy of allocating time and resources to the local community.
